Breast Reduction: “Why Didn’t I Do This Years Ago?”

The Procedure That Will Make You Say, “Why Didn’t I Do This Years Ago!”

What is a Breast Reduction?

The choice to undergo a Breast Reduction is best made with an experienced and knowledgeable plastic surgeon like Dr. Benjamin Lam.  It is important to consider many factors before undergoing a procedure like this including medical history, future plans and recovery time.

There are two typical incision types for this procedure: traditional incision and vertical incision. The incisions necessary for a breast reduction are similar to the incisions used for a breast lift.

Traditional incision breast reductions require an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola and runs down the breast crease. This incision is normally used for women with extremely large breasts.

Vertical incision breast reductions use an incision that is lollipop-shaped. It circles the areola and runs down the breast crease. This incision is typically used for women with moderately large breasts and creates a smaller scar than the traditional incision.

During the procedure excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed. Nipples and areolae are typically relocated to a higher position, and areolae will likely be made smaller. The procedure requires that the patient be put under general anesthesia and takes about 2.5 hours.

Who is a Good Candidate For a Breast Reduction?

A person who has suffered years of aches, limited physical ability, and trouble finding clothing that fits as a result of their breast size.

Breast reduction could benefit anyone with large breasts suffering from:

-Neck pain

-Back pain

-Shoulder pain & bra strap marks

-Tingling in hands

-Balance issues

-Carpal tunnel syndrome

-Headaches and migraines

Although this is a cosmetic surgery, breast reduction can potentially be covered by insurance plans. The specific criteria required for insurance coverage is dictated by the insurance carrier. Dr. Lam and Team Lam will provide guidance throughout your decision to pursue a breast reduction.
